Update: October 16 , 2019
This summer neighborhood residents voted to change the name “East Calhoun Community Organization.” Over the past month we have solicited your ideas for a new neighborhood name. Based on your suggestions, the Neighborhood Name Review Committee identified the 10 potential names on this ballot. Residents were asked to select their top three choices for a new name.
The voting deadline was October 15, 2019.
East Bde Maka Ska
What’s Next: The ballots will be counted by a three-person panel appointed by the East Calhoun Community Organization Board. Your ballot will remain confidential.
The results of the vote will be announced and final options for our new neighborhood name will be identified.
A final round of voting will determine our neighborhood’s new name.
Questions: Contact East Calhoun Community Organization Coordinator Monica Smith at firstname.lastname@example.org or 612-821-0131
On August 2, 2019, ECCO announce that the results were in and 63.7% of the 424 votes cast were to change the name “East Calhoun Community Organization.”
Neighborhood Name Community Meetings Recap:
East Calhoun Community Organization held three community meetings in May 2019 to hear from residents about the name of our neighborhood. We encourage you to review information and comments from these meetings:

The change in name from Lake Calhoun to Bde Maka Ska has lead some organizations and businesses with Calhoun in their name to consider a name change.
Our adjacent neighborhood, South Uptown, underwent such a process. In December 2018, the ECCO Board created a committee tasked with exploring a change to our neighborhood name.
The Neighborhood Name Review Committee is tasked with finding out how neighbors feel about the current name and if there is a desire for change. The committee will be responsible for creating and implementing neighborhood engagement to ensure this is a robust process.
